Information for Parents

Better Start
provides a Quality Development Service to Early Learning and Care (ELC) providers. It achieves this by using Síolta, The National Quality Framework for Early Childhood Education and Aistear, The National Early Years Curriculum Framework.

Better Start provides on-site mentoring by Early Years Specialists to staff and managers in early years services where the service has requested the Quality Development Service.

Early Years Specialists are qualified early childhood professionals with a range of skills and experience working in early years services. The Early Years Specialist will usually visit the service on a weekly or fortnightly basis, over a period of about 6 months. All Early Years Specialists are Garda Vetted.

During the quality development process, the Early Years Specialist works directly with the manager and staff in the setting to identify areas of practice, they want to develop. They do this by identifying and building on the early years settings strengths, while actively promoting the use of the Aistear Síolta Practice Guide..

Parents will be requested to sign a consent form to allow  Better Start to record information about your child’s age, gender and activities within the setting (e.g. preschool, baby room etc). Samples of children’s work (eg learning stories, artwork or activities) may be recorded and photographs or video recordings used to provide feedback to the staff in that setting.  Children's or family names will not be used in the documentation.

Better Start is fully compliant with Children First: National Guidance for the Protection and Welfare of Children (2011) and also Pobal's policy on Safeguarding Children, Young People and Vulnerable Adults.
