NEWS: Better Start Quality Development Customer Service Survey 20178  (Friday, 5th October 2017)

Tipsheet Tuesday: Heuristic Play Approach

Heuristic play is an approach which describes the activity of babies and young children as they explore objects from the real world. This useful tip sheet tells us how practitioners can introduce heuristic play sessions to their toddler groups, describes the role of the adult in facilitating heuristic play and offers some ideas of materials that could be collected to support children’s interests, such as posting, threading and collecting.

My name is Fiona Casey and I work in the Butterfly Preschool Room at Scamps & Scholars in Killorglin, Co Kerry.
Our daily routine for the preschool room is as follows: firstly, the children arrive and we sit together to take roll call and then I encourage discussion in circle time. Through this discussion I would learn about experiences the children have had outside of the preschool.
